History of the project
Om Organic cotton Pvt. Ltd (OOCPL) started as a cotton trading company in 2008. At that time Om Organic Cotton Pvt.Ltd procured produce from farmers and sold it to a gin in Bolangir. As the gin in Bolangir was the only cotton processing unit in the district, the prices and terms offered were largely exploitative. Om Organic Cotton Pvt. Ltd therefore set up its own ginning and pressing unit in 2009.
Then Om organic Cotton Pvt.Ltd established a not for profit organisation under the name of Bansal Organic Growers Group (BOGG) in 2008 to promote organic and Fair Trade Cotton.
The primary objective of BOGG was to improve the livelihoods of small and marginal cotton producing families in Bolangir District through organic and fair-trade certified cotton production and collective marketing undertaken by their own institution. The project sought to build the capacities of the organic farmers through three main thrust areas:
Since the inception of OOCPL A total 3987 farmers have transitioned into sustainable agriculture which is certified for organic , Fair-Trade and GOTS standards and covers 5478.314 hectares.
Bansal Organic grower Group started with focus on organic cotton. The members of the society grow crops such as cotton, pulses and vegetables. The focus of the society is the production of organically certified agriculture products.
Om Organic Cotton Pvt.Ltd would be owned by small and marginal farmers under the banner of (Bansal Organic Growers Group (BOGG), in the Bolangir district, Odisha state, India.
